To Be Continued (2016)
In early 2016 I was selected, along with the artists Bob Birch, Rob Harrington and Gillian Holding to take part in a two week artists residency at the beginining of April at Left Bank Leeds, a de-sanctified Gothic Revival church in Headingley.
The focus of this residency was to be Space and Place, and we had all individually proposed to articulate and respond to these themes within the building, with a view to mounting a joint exhibition at the end of the residency period. Taking part in this residency was an overwhelmingly positive experience for me, as it (somewhat unexpectedly) provided the opportunity to reflect upon and re-evaluate the full range of my current and historical modes of sculptural practice during an intensive period of making. It also allowed me to produce a significant body of new work, despite the brevity of the residency period. The camaraderie and mutual support which I gained from working alongside the other artists involved was invaluable, and led me to gain several important insights in to my practice and process, of which perhaps the most important was Gillian's suggestion that what I do is, at some fundamental level, painting with objects. Many thanks to everyone at Left Bank Leeds, especially Courtney and Steve, for making this project possible. |
